Biography

Emilie Edling is the lead attorney in our Portland office and her practice is focused on business litigation and appeals. She has substantial experience defending corporations and financial institutions in the mortgage servicing industry, and also handles product liability disputes. She handles matters in both State and Federal Court, and is licensed in Oregon, Washington, and California. Her trial achievements include a unanimous defense verdict obtained in a six-figure case after less than ten minutes of deliberation.

Ms. Edling has served as the lead appellate attorney in numerous appeals and argued before the California, Oregon, and Washington Court of Appeals as well as the Ninth, Tenth, and Seventh Circuit Courts. She is also admitted in the Federal Court of Claims and Federal Circuit Court. Recently, Ms. Edling successfully argued and briefed an important case for the mortgage industry, resulting in a published Ninth Circuit opinion that drew heavily from the firm’s briefing and analysis.

Ms. Edling received her Juris Doctorate with honors (Order of the Coif) from the University of Oregon in 2003. While in law school, she was elected Executive Editor of the University of Oregon Law Review, she participated in moot court competitions, was a mock trial finalist, and she tried five jury trials solo through the law school’s Criminal Prosecution Clinic. After law school, Ms. Edling served a term as a judicial clerk for the U.S. District Court in the District of Nevada before joining a large Portland law firm.

Membership, Recognition, and Community Involvement

Ms. Edling has been selected to the Oregon Super Lawyers as a “Rising Star” for eight years running, an honor given to 2.5 percent of Oregon lawyers under the age of forty. She is a past chair of the Oregon State Bar’s Diversity Section and in 2012, she received the Oregon State Bar President’s Affirmative Action Award for her work to advance diversity within the Oregon State Bar. In 2011 she was recognized by her peers as a “Convocation on Equality Diversity Champion” for her work mentoring minority attorneys and serving on the board of organizations committed to supporting and furthering diversity within the bar. And in 2010, she was named as one of the Top 40 “Best LGBT Lawyers under 40” by the National LGBT Bar Association for their inaugural award .

Ms. Edling continues to volunteer within the legal community, but has in more recent years focused her attention on working as a 4-H leader assisting youth in her county. She continues to lead a 4-H dog training club that she founded in 2007, and has served as a superintendent of her county’s fair during most of the years from 2007 to the present.
